THE MINI-DOCUMENTARY

It has been completed.  You can find it on www.goodtube.org under our name or the Healthcare heading or the link provided on our own web site.  One thing that really stands out watching the video is the passion and commitment from everyone!  I’m only sorry that all of our volunteers and our Board of Directors weren’t available to participate in the filming.  It has indeed taken a village to make this program work—a LGBT and LGBT-supportive village.  What a powerful statement about the men and women of our community.

Cathedral City

Thank you so much Cathedral City.  Chuck Vasquez, a DWE champion, has informed us that we will be receiving $4,000 as a Community Assistance Grant.  This will help us continue our efforts in 2010 to provide Cathedral City women easy access to a free mammogram.   Because of the increased need, we are planning double clinics (two machines) for all of 2010

Supervisor Roy Wilson

A support from the beginning, Roy Wilson has come to DWE’s aid again!  We just received $10,000 to help with our East Valley clinics from Supervisor Wilson’s office.  Heartfelt thanks for your continued support.

Desert Healthcare District Grant Application

We’ve applied to DHCD again but this time for a 19-month grant to help us through December 2010.  Keep your fingers crossed.  We should get the good news by month’s end.   Getting the support of funding agencies is critical to our existence as is your continued membership in our organization and your frequent donations and volunteer time.  Put it all together and we are able to provide monthly double clinics.  We estimate that we will be helping 80 to 100 women a month in the coming months.

Flying Doctors

The date is set—November 14, 2009.  Yes, DWE and, hopefully, all of our Board and Mammogram Committee will be in Thermal helping the Flying Doctors provide medical care to the uninsured/underinsured of our Valley.  We’re hoping that the Flying Doctors will include us every year from now on.  Funding for this clinic has been provided by Profiles in Caring (our esteemed videographers) and, hopefully, a second grant from Regional Access Project (they have already given us money for the City of Coachella’s clinics).

DWE Celebration

Kathryn White, our Events Chair extraordinaire, is coordinating a DWE Celebration in October 2009.  We never were able to put together a 1000 mammogram party (too busy giving mammograms) but we now have Kathryn.  Her ideas and energy will make this October celebration an event to remember.  Our Events Committee is gearing up and we’re all looking forward to celebrating our achievements. You’ll be hearing from Kathryn soon about her Committee’s plans.

Number of Mammograms

I think we’re up to 1,285 but I could be mistaken—it’s actually getting harder and harder to keep count.  Actually, that’s not entirely true.  Our very own Diane Tremblay keeps our database up to date and is now running a myriad of reports that helps us apply for grants and gather important information about the women we are serving.  Reading the paper about a possible State budget cut for breast cancer aftercare for women over 65 was alarming indeed.  Diane is now checking to see how many 65 plus women we’ve served since June 2006.  I’ll let you know and I’ll also let the State know how important their follow-up programs are to all women including our Coachella Valley seniors.
