GOODBYE TO KEN RUSSELL
When we first started our We Care Free Mammogram Program in 2006, Ken Russell was right there volunteering and giving us his all because he believed in our program and was a very good man. Ken’s health started to fail but no matter what he made it to our office to do his monthly shifts.
I was lucky enough to personally get to know Ken and to hear all about his beloved dogs (Dorothy and then Boris) and his trips to the Palm Springs dog park. Ken was a very special man and we certainly lost him too soon. Thank you Ken for being such a giving person, for caring about women’s health and for just being who you were. We will dearly miss Ken.
A MEDICAL HOME
Hopefully, we will have a social worker affiliated with Find Food attend our March clinic with resource information for our clients so that they can be better informed regarding other State, County and City programs that might be available to them for their other health needs. The Board is very excited about this additional service being offered to our clients.
The ultimate idea is that woman will have a “medical home”, a place where they can go when they need preventative and other medical care. We’re also waiting for the Affordable Health Care Act to help our uninsured/underinsured clients. Unfortunately, there may be some women who still won’t be able to get preventative medical care under the AHCA. DWE will continue to fund raise for free mammography screenings until we are no longer needed.

2013 OFFICER ELECTIONS
Here they are: BARBARA BARRETT, PRESIDENT JOY GUNNETT, VICE-PRESIDENT/SECRETARY BARBARA BARRETT, INTERIM TREASURER (our 2012 Treasurer has taken a three-leave of absence). SHARON DOTY continues on as our Mammogram Chair. NEW DIRECTOR AND VOLUNTEER SEARCH DWE is looking for new directors and if you are interested in being part of our program, please call me at 760 323 2622.
All I can say is that from my own experience and from comments made by others, being part of DWE is a life-affirming experience. There is nothing that feels quite as good as knowing that work that you are doing is saving women’s lives and that this community effort is made up of ALL volunteers--no paid employees. Please call and let’s talk! Also, we always needs new office volunteers and clinic volunteers. Bonnie Lunt, our fabulous Volunteer Coordinator, can be reached at binthedesert@dc.rr.com. You can set up a time with Bonnie to be trained. You can volunteer for as little as one day a month (10 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift) or take more shifts and can also be trained to help us at our clinics. Just a little bit of time a month goes a long, long way. Email Bonnie and she will get back to you asap.
GOLF TOURNAMENT-FUND RAISER
Women from Palm Desert have joined together to hold a golf tournament to benefit DWE. Once a year they “Think Pink” and raise money for a breast cancer organization. Usually, they have given it to a national organization to help with research but this year they found us and we are so happy that they did.
It is help like this that keeps us strong and helps us continue to find the energy to put in the long hours and hard work that it takes to run our program. We get energized by the enthusiasm and excitement of others. Word is that now that we are found, we might receive their support every year. Thank you, thank you.
