Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert
A great big thank you for giving Desert Women for Equality $2,000. Your gift represents the continued support we are getting from our community.
The LGBT community has once again shown that it is our love of equality that makes us very special people. The free mammogram program was borne to help lesbians, a high-risk breast cancer group, get life-saving preventative medical care. And, along the way we are serving all uninsured and underinsured women of our Valley. I never thought that this great rich nation of ours would have to resort to grass roots medical care but that day has come and has been with us for a long time now. We need to take care of our own and we are! Thanks so much leather guys!
Volunteers
Hey, did I tell you that we have 20, that’s right 20 volunteers doing shifts in our office. Amazing. They are all dedicated men and women who believe in what DWE is doing. We still need people to train to be at our clinics.

Clinic Update
January in Desert Hot Springs; February in Coachella; and March back to DHS. One hundred and forty-five women were served in 2008 bringing our total since June 2006 to over 560 and we still have five more clinics to do this year.

We’ve asked Cathedral City to grant us $10K (just like Coachella did) and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they will. (Our program in Coachella has been so successful that we’ve been invited back to ask for another $10k to help fund our 2009 clinics.) Council member Gregg Pettis, a staunch supporter of our program, said he wanted to have clinics in Cathedral City. We’re ready to do a clinic in the new CC senior center and are hoping that the City will help us pay for it. We’ll be in Indio in May and our clinic there is booked.
Free Prostate Cancer Testing
Our Board is investigating the possibility of expanding our services to give the uninsured and underinsured men in our Valley a free prostate cancer screening test. We want to keep our men alive too! I’ll keep you posted on the progress of this new program.

Regional Access Project
Many thanks to RAP and their executive director, Judith Cox, for giving us free printing and translation services. Our brochure and flyers have never looked better.
Palm Springs Gay Rodeo
Wow—we’ve been named the sole beneficiary of the Palm Springs, Hot Rodeo 2008 and Hunter’s, a rodeo sponsor, will also be doing a benefit for us. We’ll be reminding you to get your tickets to see this year’s rodeo and also to remind you that by supporting the rodeo you are helping us and our women.
